How to Build a Workout Streak You Don't Break

Every mile is a deposit. A streak is the account.
Most streaks don't die from laziness. They die from bad design: a definition of "a day" so ambitious that one rough Tuesday takes the whole thing down. Build it right and the streak protects you on the mornings you can't protect yourself.
Rule one: define the minimum
Write down the smallest thing that counts as a day. Twenty minutes of work. One lift. A two-mile run. Small enough to do sick, jet-lagged, or running on four hours of sleep.
The minimum day feels like cheating the first time you use it. It isn't. A twenty-minute day keeps the account open. A zero closes it, and reopening costs more than anyone budgets for.
Rule two: never miss twice
You will miss a day. Life doesn't care about your log. The rule isn't perfection, it's this: one miss is an accident, two is a new habit forming in the wrong direction.
The day after a miss is the most important training day of your year. Show up for it at any size. Minimum day, half a session, a walk in the cold if that's what's left. The streak isn't the unbroken chain. It's the refusal to let one gap become two.
Rule three: keep the log where you'll see it
A calendar on the garage wall. A notebook on the kitchen counter. Marks you have to walk past, not a stat buried in an app.
Here's mine: I missed a Tuesday in March. Slept through two alarms after a brutal week, woke up at 6:40 to a done deal. I stared at that empty square for days. Wednesday's session was nothing special on paper, but it might be the most important one I did all year, because it made March one hole instead of a collapse.
What the streak is actually for
Not the number. Numbers are for posting, and you're not building this to post it.
The streak is proof, kept in your own handwriting, that you're the kind of person who shows up. On the mornings when motivation is nowhere and the bed is winning the argument, you won't reach for a feeling. You'll reach for the record.
Deposits, made daily, in the dark. The account compounds whether anyone checks the balance or not.
